Gel Polish vs. Regular Polish: Which Should You Choose?
August 10, 2026 3 min read
One of the most common questions at our Winston-Salem nail salon is whether to get gel polish or stick with regular polish. Here's a simple breakdown.
Gel polish
Gel polish is cured under a UV or LED lamp, creating a hard, glossy finish that resists chips. It typically lasts 2–3 weeks and is ideal if you want low-maintenance color.
Regular polish
Regular nail polish air-dries and offers more color variety and easier at-home removal. It's a good choice if you like to change colors often or prefer not to use a lamp.
Side-by-side comparison
- Longevity: Gel wins — 2–3 weeks vs. 5–7 days.
- Shine: Gel stays glossy the whole time; regular polish can dull.
- Removal: Regular polish is easier to remove at home.
- Cost: Gel polish usually costs a bit more.
- Nail health: Both are safe when applied and removed properly.

When regular polish makes sense
- Trying a bold color for one weekend
