Dip Powder Nails 101: What to Know Before Your First Set

Dip powder has become one of the most requested services at our Winston-Salem salon. It's a great middle ground between gel polish and acrylic — here's why.

How dip powder works

Your nail is prepped with a bonding agent, then dipped into finely milled colored powder. The process is repeated until the color is opaque, then sealed with a clear top coat. No UV lamp is needed, which makes it popular with clients who prefer to skip the light.

Pros of dip powder

• Long-lasting: Most clients get 3–4 weeks without chipping.
• Lightweight: Thinner than acrylic and more natural-feeling.
• Odor-free: No strong monomer smell during application.
• Stronger than gel polish: Great if your natural nails are prone to splitting.

Things to keep in mind

Dip powder removal requires soaking in acetone. Picking it off will take layers of your natural nail with it. We also recommend dip on shorter to medium lengths — very long nails are usually better suited to acrylic or Gel-X.
